“Wellington Stories” – a Young People’s Geographies Project.

The aim of the project is to get Year 8 students to consider their “Personal Geography” in the form of stories, memories, and descriptions of their town. They have been encouraged to think about how their local place influences them – their values and attitudes and how they percieve the wider world. A similar project by a group of students of the same age in London would result in very different stories.

The stories will grow and develop as the students continue to explore their relationship with their local area. Many have chosen to take photos and make videos, and these will be added as they are completed. The project is being undertaken in the students’ spare time.

QR codes have been generated for each story. This allows the students to tag the actual locations and objects on which their stories are based. Members of the public coming across the tags can read the stories and add comments*. In this way places and objects come alive, telling their stories via the young people of Wellington.

* comments are moderated for e-safety reasons

A post on Digital Geography explains the idea further.
